New Haven Age Group Track Club (NHAGTC) is Greater New Haven’s premier youth track club. It was founded almost half a century ago, in 1975, by Coach James Barber, of Southern Connecticut State University, and two of his athletes: Dianne Wright and Rachel Hamlet. Their goal was to create a program that was disciplined, inspirational, and academic-minded – much like a top-tier Division One program. Coach William Thompson eventually took over the program and continued to expand its mission. Today we carry on their proud tradition.
Our athletes have gone on to become elite runners at the high school and collegiate level. They include NCAA champions. We have long-standing relationships with both Yale University and Southern Connecticut State University. Both institutions have generously opened their doors to us, shared their facilities, and encouraged their students to mentor our athletes. Over the years, our program has trained and mentored over 4,000 young people. Our goal is to coach, encourage, and nurture every athlete, regardless of their speed. What we value and what we teach – above else – is discipline, humility, respect, and a love for our community.
