  • Vanessa Thompson, Cross Country/Distance Coach

Vanessa joined the New Haven Age Group Track Club when she was in the fifth grade. Her dad (the famous Coach T!) helped coach her and many others as well. The track club emphasized education, discipline, dedication, hard work, and commitment, and taught her the fundamentals of running. As a young runner, she had a 400 “runoff” with another club member at Bowen Field for the Youth Games. Her coach, Mr. Barber, explained that he could only enter one athlete in each event; so, whoever lost the race, would have to run the 800. She lost the race and was running the 800 ever since.

Some of her accomplishments, during her time with the club, include winning the Junior Olympics in the 800 and 1500. In high school, she won the State Opens in Cross Country (multiple years) and was the state champion in the 800m and 1500m. She held the Class S 800m record for over twenty years. (Her best time was 2:09 and her best 1500m time was 4:32). She was recognized as an All-American in track and field and cross country.

Vanessa went to Michigan State University on a full track and field and cross country scholarship. She earned her bachelor’s degree in communications and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 2019.

After 20 years of service, she retired from the New Haven Police Department last year. She is excited to give back to the track program. Her parents are deceased, but Vanessa knows they would be happy to know that she is helping the kids in the club!
